Light Craft

Rafael El Baz

This research project explores the intersection of colour, pattern, and advanced laser technology, redefining the sustainable transformation of metals. By harnessing the precision of light and heat, the laser produces vibrant, permanent hues and intricate surface patterns without the need for paints, dyes, or chemical treatments. This pioneering approach offers an environmentally conscious alternative to conventional colouring methods, significantly reducing waste and pollution.

Drawing inspiration from natural patination processes, traditional craftsmanship, and the precision of industrial engineering, the project seeks to integrate aesthetics with sustainability. The laser’s interaction with metal surfaces manipulates oxidation and microstructures, creating a spectrum of iridescent tones and intricate motifs that shift with light and perspective. These effects not only enhance the visual and tactile qualities of metal but also extend its functional applications across architecture, product design, and fine art.

By embedding colour and pattern as intrinsic elements of material transformation, this research challenges industry norms and opens new possibilities for sustainable surface design. It invites designers, artists, and engineers to reconsider how materials are finished, offering a future where decoration is both enduring and eco-friendly. Ultimately, this project redefines the role of metal as a dynamic and responsive medium in contemporary design.
