Our Climate Present
On Thursday, December 5, Falmouth University and The Independent will host “Our Climate Present,” an event focusing on sustainable fashion. This day-long event will take place from 10 AM to 6 PM GMT at the Fashion and Textile Museum, located at 83 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 3XF.
The program is designed to address the role of sustainability in fashion, coinciding with World Climate Day. Attendees will engage with a range of topics through talks and hands-on workshops, aiming to provide practical knowledge on sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
The day begins with a workshop by Rebel Patch from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM on the ground floor. This session focuses on textile repair and modification, teaching participants basic skills like darning and sashiko stitching, and encourages bringing a garment for practical application.
From 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the People’s Assembly, facilitated by Sara Arnold of Fashion Act Now, will take place. This session will include discussions on the sustainable demands needed from the fashion industry and will involve collective decision-making on strategies for change.
The final talk of the day from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM by Alice Holloway will discuss the development of a fashion commons as a sustainable response to the climate crisis. Holloway will cover the benefits of community-based fashion practices and the role of the gift economy in supporting sustainable fashion ecosystems.
The event will also offer an opportunity for networking with activists, fashion students, industry professionals, and concerned citizens. Refreshments will be available, and the day will conclude with a viewing of the ‘Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London’ exhibition.
Participation is free, but space is limited. Interested attendees are encouraged to register early.
